The Road West Begins
From An English Dairy Farm To Western Canada
Grahame’s story did not begin beneath a cowboy hat. He was born in England and raised on a dairy farm. In 1976, at fourteen, he immigrated to Canada. A teenager had to take in a new country, wider distances, and a future he could not yet see. The landscape changed, but life with animals did not feel strange. The dairy years had already made their care part of his normal day.
The people behind the poems matter to Grahame. Family, friends, and workmates shared photographs for his latest collection. The pictures became illustrations and, at times, sparked a poem. Together, they make the book personal: a record shaped by the people and animals who were there.
“Not all cowboys come from the same country, climate, or background. Some are very tall and slim, some are short and round.” — From “Different Styles,” in This Cowboyin’ Thing, on page 2
